2015 Recipient of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic

WHIEESeptember 15, 2015 – New York, New York – Art of Stepping is proud to announce that our Founder Jessica ‘Remo’ Saul was chosen by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanic as a Bright Spot which was announced at press conference today by Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the Initiative at the launch of Hispanic Heritage Month and in honor of the Initiatives 25th anniversary in Washington, DC.

The White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (Initiative) was originally established by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 to address the educational disparities faced by the Hispanic community. On Oct. 19, 2010, President Obama signed Executive Order 13555, renewing his commitment which demonstrated the President’s strong support for the critical role Hispanics play in the overall prosperity of the nation and highlights the administration’s commitment to expanding educational opportunities and improving educational outcomes for all students.

The Initiative seeks to leverage the chosen Bright Spots to encourage collaboration between stakeholders focused on similar issues in sharing data-driven approaches, promising practice, per advice, and effective partnerships, ultimately resulting in increased support for the educational attainment of the Hispanic community, from cradle to career. September 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (Initiative) and to commemorate this, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan and the Initiative launched the “Anniversary Year of Action: Fulfilling America’s Future” from October 2014 through September 2015.Recognizing that the success of our country is a shared responsibility, the Initiative is committed to engaging leaders from all sectors to invest in meaningful, lasting approaches to increasing access and success for Latino students from cradle to career.

Brief biography overview of our founder: Jessica “Remo” Saul, often referred to as Remo (short for “remolina”) due to her being a “whirlwind” of energy, is the founder and owner of the Art of Stepping®(AOS). AOS is the 1st and only organization in the U.S. to build a nationwide curriculum-based program that teaches stepping based on mathematical formulas. HER GOAL: To ensure individuals of all ages have access to artistic programs, especially those in underserved communities, that encourages & promotes both education and healthy lifestyles. In 2010, AOS was the proud recipient of the President’s Council Fitness, Sports and Nutrition Award for its mission in aiding the fight against childhood obesity and other related diseases. In 2012, AOS has grown to 7 different states offering services to over 1,200+ individuals nationwide with national recognition by Fox News Latino, MTV True Life: I’m a Stepper, Univision-Accesso Total, Despierta America, Latina Magazine and Famous Footwear. Born & raised in the Bronx, New York by Dominican-Puerto Rican parents, she has created a curriculum to be taught both in English and Spanish with the hopes of bridging the educational gap within underserved and underprivileged communities.
